About the author:
Pauline Chen is passionate about improving care for patients near the end of life.

A transplant surgeon who also specializes in the treatment of cancer, Dr. Chen recently began writing a weekly online column, "Doctor and Patient," in the NY Times Health section. She is past recipient of the George Longstreth Humanness Award from Yale University for most exemplifying empathy, kindness and care in an age of advancing technology. She also was named 1999 UCLA Outstanding Physician of the Year.

Dr. Chen will discuss the practice and art of caring for seriously ill patients.

Dr. Chen′s lecture will launch California′s Health Care Decisions Week (Oct 26 - Nov 1, 2008), a time for people to think about the kind of care they would want if they become seriously ill or incapacitated, talk with their loved ones and doctors, and write down their wishes in an advance directive document.
