Early in 1998, SHD joined with other regional and state organizations to form the California Coalition for Compassionate Care to bring about  meaningful change in the delivery of end-of-life care in California.

Currently, over 30 healthcare and community organizations are participating, including the California Healthcare Association, California Department of Health Services, AARP, California Council of Churches, California's nursing home associations, health ministry networks, senior organizations and many others.

A $450,000 grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is supporting the Coalition's three initiatives:

  • Nursing Facilities: Improving end-of-life, decision-making and palliative care for residents of California's 1400 skilled nursing facilities through collaboratively established policy and practice recommendations, curricula and training of SNF and Department of Health Services staff.

  • Professional Education: Promoting existing and offering new end-of-life educational opportunities for physicians, nurses and pharmacists.

  • Public Engagement: Educating the public through innovative advance care planning materials and interactive group discussions.  As chair of the Public Engagement Workgroup SHD is working with organizations and individuals statewide to encourage reflection and discussion about end-of-life issues.
