SHD is a private, nonprofit organization committed to bridging community values and healthcare policy and practice in the Sacramento region.

SHD is currently involved in two major projects:

      1. Visible Fairness project – exploring with the public the trade-offs between cost and benefit of treatment decisions, to assure a healthcare system that is "fair" and "visible".

      2. Advance Care Planning – engaging the public in reflection, discussion and action on end-of-life issues through materials, tools and trainings.

SHD assures that the public has a voice—as individual consumers and as a community—in the changing healthcare environment and functions as a nonpartisan linkage among the public, providers and policymakers.

Specifically, SHD's role is to…

    1. Provide a nonpartisan forum for civic education about individual and societal healthcare issues.

    2. Serve as a catalyst and resource for building public involvement in improving healthcare policy and practice.

    3. Develop models based on collaboration between the public and providers to address health policy issues.

    4. Facilitate collaboration among the public and other healthcare stakeholders as they respond to issues identified through the health decisions process.

"Health decisions" organizations

There are approximately 12 independent health decisions organizations around the country, each committed to assuring that community values play a role in improving healthcare policy and practice.   SHD and its colleagues in other states are members of American Health Decisions www.ahd.org, a national umbrella organization that promotes the mission of values-based citizen participation in healthcare issues.
